Thumbnail Kids

Because myopia is very often progressive, distance vision continues to get worse and worse. This means your child constantly needs an updated stronger prescription and new glasses or contacts.

Our Patients Say it Best
I usually Dr hop when my prescription is up for renewal but I was really pleased with Dr. Brown’s expertise and customer service. I have a pretty severe eye injury and he was helpful in finding the right course of action for me. He personally took my call and gave me directions on some at-home treatment options. Highly recommend!

Q+A with Dr. Brown

I do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses in my day-to-day, but would not want to (or cannot) have surgery, like LASIK. Is there any alternative?

As a matter of fact, there is!

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is something which reshapes the surface of your eyes, similar to what orthodontics does for teeth. It allows you to be free of glasses and contact lenses during the day, allowing for more comfort in your activities and enduring the Santa Ana winds, specifically during the dry winter when contact lens wear is the most uncomfortable.

You can be free of contacts during the day, and wear these hard contact lenses during the night instead.

What is the recommended minimum age for children using ortho-k?

In five minutes, I have taught seven-year-olds how to insert, remove, and handle the lenses.

How long must a child wear the ortho-k lenses for them to be effective?

If worn for under eight hours, the effects may wear off during the afternoon of the following day.

How often must ortho-k lenses be replaced?

The manufacturers recommend replacing the lenses annually. However, we can advise patients on whether they can use their lenses for a longer period of time before replacement.
